Chapter Eighteen

Clem

“I can’t believe he’s actually going through with this.” My sister is fastening on my stupid hat for the Derby today, and it reminds me of my wedding day.

“He’s really going to marry that hussy.” Ellie pulls a bobby pin from between her teeth. “Have you tried to talk him out of it?”

“He won’t talk to me. I tried when I saw Margret’s father introducing them to the press. I couldn’t stomach the way he was looking at her.”

“Did you get to talk to him?”

“He told me to leave him alone, what’s done is done. Margret was hanging all over him. It was sickening.”

“You know he doesn’t love her.”

“You could’ve fooled me by the way he was eyeing her, and of course her hands were all over him.” I slump down in my chair, feeling defeated and heartbroken.

“So what are you going to do?”

“Get over him.”

“Pish! You left here for seven years and never got over him. You may have thought you did, but the moment you two saw one another, it was on.”

“He’ll be a married man after today. I don’t have any other choice but to get over him.”

“You mean to tell me, you came back here and figured out that you still love Boone Methany and you’re just going to let him go? I’d like to kick your ass myself.” She huffs.

“Oh, what would you do if you were in my shoes?” I’m up on my feet, holding my long gown off the ground.

“I wouldn’t be going to his wedding. I’d scratch that hussy’s eyes out and get my man back.”

“You think I want to go see Boone marry that bitch? Daddy has insisted we all go. I don’t understand that man. He was furious at Boone about Whiskey.”

“Daddy is a strange one, that’s for sure. But he loves Boone like a son and maybe, just maybe, he knows something we don’t.”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know, but there has to be some reason Daddy is asking us to support this marriage.”

“Because he doesn’t want me and Boone together. He thinks I’ll break his heart again.”

She punches me in the shoulder.

“Ouch! What was that for?”

“For being such an idiot. Daddy always thought you and Boone should be together. Even after you left him at the altar.”

“That’s news to me.” My hands fly to my hips.

“Well, it’s true. So you need to paint on some pretty pink lipstick and mess up Boone’s collar before the wedding. Margret will see the lip prints and lose her shit.”

“When did you get to be so conniving?”

“Stick around, and you’ll learn a lot more about me.” She laughs, slowly putting her hat on her head as to not mess up her hair.

We walk out into the formal living room where all our family is waiting on us. Daddy and Wyatt are in a corner whispering.

“Aunt Clem, you look so pretty. Pink is my favorite color.” Missy’s little hand tugs at the hem of my silky dress.

“You look pretty too. Purple happens to be my favorite color.
